Check out these 7 home reno fails and learn from some of the painful mistakes that have been made in the past:

1. Concrete culprits
A note to driveway crews everywhere—or really, anyone who works with wet cement—when leaving cement to dry, keep watch. Otherwise, you could end up like the driveway workers who took lunch, only to come back and find a hoard of duck footprints in their freshly laid cement. Oops!

2. Upside down kitty door
Do you have a cute little cat? Are you dying to give them an adorable DIY kitty door, maybe one leading to your bedroom or kitchen? Well, when you take that door off of its hinges with the grand idea in mind, be sure to check which end of the door you’re cutting a hole into. If you don’t,  well…you could end up just like the person who installed a kitty door for cats who walk on ceilings.

3. Hair dye
Always make sure you know where your paint is, whether it has made it onto the wall or is still sitting in the can. This is especially important if you plan on resting your paint can in a precarious place, such as on top of a ladder. Unfortunately, one person who forgot to move the paint can before shifting the ladder that it was resting upon got paint spilled atop their head. Free hair dye!

4. Leashless roomba
If you’re in the process of renovations, be sure to keep a leash on your roomba—or at least just shut it down until you’re finished. While our little vacuum buddies can be great most of the time, there have been a few horror stories—including one where a person’s roomba found a small piece of sheetrock and accidentally dragged it across their floors, scratching all of the hardwood. Yikes!

5. Closet door disaster
Painting your closet doors can be a great way to spruce up your living space. When painting doors with slats, however, it’s important that you empty the contents of the closet first and foremost. Otherwise, you might end up with some stripy new jackets.

6. Running dry
When renovating, always make sure that you have enough paint. While this is likely common knowledge for most people—especially those who have done plenty of home renos before—tons of people run out of paint on the very last corner. To avoid this frustration, buy the extra can of paint—it’s better to have more than less!

7. Microwave smash
Microwaves are heavy, so it’s best not to situate them above your stove—especially if your stove top is made of glass. Instead, putting your microwave on a stable, flat surface is a good way to avoid any damage and subsequent stress.
