Human Foods that are Safe for Dogs to Eat
Dogs are man’s best friend, at least that is what the old saying suggests. As your best friend, you may be tempted to give in to their begging and puppy dog eyes. There are quite a few types of human food that you will be able to share with your dog safely. You just need to be sure that you are not overfeeding them and not feeding them anything potentially toxic. If you are curious about safe human foods for dogs, as well as toxic foods for dogs, here are just a few of the most common:
1. Dairy products
Cheese, milk, and yogurt are all tasty treats that most people enjoy on a regular basis. It is okay to share these things with your four-legged friend, as long as it is in moderation. Dogs have much lower levels of lactase, which is the enzyme that breaks down the sugars in milk. So, too much dairy would be like giving a lactose-intolerant person too much.
2. Raisins or grapes
Even the smallest amount of grapes or raisins can make your dog extremely sick. This is because they are highly toxic to dogs. This toxicity can lead to rapid kidney failure and in some cases, death.
3. Peanut butter
There are loads of different toys and treats that involve peanut butter. Pet companies wouldn’t do this unless peanut butter is safe for your dog. In fact, dog’s love the texture of peanut butter in a Kong toy. So, if you finish a jar of peanut butter, remove the wrapper and let your dog go licking. They are guaranteed to enjoy it.
4. Coffee, tea or chocolate
Tea, coffee, and chocolate are all tasty treats to humans. However, they can be very harmful to your pet. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which are two stimulants that dogs can not metabolize. The less sweet and darker chocolates are more harmful than milk chocolate. Caffeine and tea cannot be consumed by your dog because they have such high amounts of caffeine. Caffeine will stimulate your dog’s nervous system which can lead to seizures, tremors, lung failure, abnormal heart rhythm which could potentially lead to death.
5. Chicken, pork and turkey
Most dog foods will contain one of these prime protein sources. When you feed your dog chicken or turkey, make sure that it is completely off of the bone and free of any salt or spices. Bones can cause your dog to choke or even puncture their digestive tract. Pork is another great protein source. However, make sure it doesn’t have any spices, sauces, or seasonings that could harm your pup.
6. Garlic, chives and onions
All of these foods can be pretty harmful to dogs. This is because they contain organosulfides, which can lead to vomiting, stomach pain, anemia, and diarrhea for dogs.
